Homberg, Herz
(1749-1841)
   Bohemian educa-tionalist and leading figure of the Haskalah. He was born in Lieben near Prague. He served as tutor to Moses Mendelssohn's son in 1779. In 1782 he moved to Vienna, and later in the 1780s taught at the Jewish school in Trieste. In 1787 he became super-intendent of German-language schools in Galicia and assistant censor of Jewish books. He subse-quently was censor of Hebrew books in Vienna. From 1814 he was government inspector of Jewish schools in Bohemia. He advocated the reform of Jewish education, the teaching of Hebrew grammar and German, and the purging of Jewish literature of superstition and hatred of the gentiles.
